Marc Luber
Managing Director
Clients and candidates alike value Marc for his consultative, candid approach. He is known for asking thoughtful questions, providing clear context, and helping people make clear-headed decisions when the path forward isn’t obvious.
Marc’s approach is intentionally non-transactional. He is invested in helping people and firms find the right fit, with the understanding that alignment around goals, values, and expectations is what ultimately leads to successful, lasting outcomes.
Marc is a graduate of the University of Michigan (B.A., English) and the Chicago-Kent College of Law, a member of the Illinois Bar, and a Certified Executive Coach. Before entering recruiting and career coaching, he had a first career in the music industry managing bands and working for organizations including the Rolling Stones, A&M Records, Rondor Music Publishing and LicenseMusic.com. Marc lives in Los Angeles and also spends significant time in his hometown of Chicago.
Marc Luber is a senior recruiter at Onward Recruiting, where he advises lawyers and legal teams on career and hiring decisions that require more than surface-level matchmaking. He works closely with attorneys at inflection points - whether evaluating a potential move, redefining success, or navigating uncertainty - to help them make informed, intentional choices aligned with their long-term goals.
Marc brings more than two decades of experience in legal recruiting and career development to his work. His perspective is shaped not only by years in search, but also by a decade spent building and leading JD Careers Out There (JDCOT), a career coaching and education platform he founded to help lawyers understand the full range of paths available to them. That work sharpened his ability to listen deeply, identify patterns, and translate complex career questions into practical next steps.
OFF THE CLOCK
A few things that have shaped me:
I’m curious by nature, people-oriented, calm under pressure, and someone who values showing up prepared and seeing things through.
Lifetime obsession:
Music. I saw Nirvana in concert and experienced a 5,000-person room erupt into a full-scale mosh pit - yes, it was epic. I followed the Grateful Dead around and would’ve dragged you along if timing had worked out. I was there for Phish’s Millennium New Year’s Eve all-night concert on an Indian reservation in Florida, alongside 90,000 others. Pre-internet, I once spent an entire night in a shopping-mall parking lot waiting for Ticketmaster to open, all in the name of great David Bowie tickets.
Best story I won’t tell here:
I once helped resolve a minor dispute between Michael Jackson and Prince. For real. Ask me about it sometime—I’m always happy to tell that story.
A place or experience that changed my perspective:
Traveling to Moscow and St. Petersburg on a humanitarian trip when I was young.
Early lessons that stuck:
I spent my childhood summers at an overnight camp in Bemidji, Minnesota — canoeing up and down the Mississippi River, camping, shooting rifles and archery, and gawking at the Northern Lights. They drilled one mantra into us early and often: take only photos, leave only footprints.
An adventure that tested my limits:
While staying in a tree house on a jungle island in Panama, I was stung by a bullet ant—widely considered the most painful insect sting in the world. I can confirm the reputation is accurate.
Things they don’t teach you in law school:
My first job after law school included watching Mick Jagger play video games.
Favorite quotes:
“If you get confused, just listen to the music play.”
“It’s all ball bearings these days.”
